Patterns, ‘Seascapes’ and Sunset
Today marked a change in weather as winter wonderland has disappeared from the island and we have ‘normal’ rain and showers in return. Nonetheless the weather forecast showed a small chance for an opening in the clouds around sunset, and I wanted to go out to the beach around the lighthouse as I didn’t revisit it after my first day here. During an 8.5 kilometer hike passing the lighthouse towards the Northern beach, then toward the Western beach, I captured plenty of images, even when there were no gaps in the clouds and rain bashing down on me and my equipment. I will have to go through them in more detail, the photos shown here are my first, quick selection.
When arriving at the Northern beach I concentrated some more on patterns in the sand. After my first attempts I notice I get quite relaxed and satisfied when photographing these patterns. Who would have thought! Here’s an extended selection of my ‘harvest’.
After this pattern searching I tried out some seascapes. I must admit this is not my style as I shot a lot of photos hoping for some interesting waveforms; I didn’t find it relaxing like the pattern searching. Plus, the beach here doesn’t allow for dramatic waves. Here are two from my many tryouts before I gave up.
Eventually I started walking towards the Western beach. The weather forecast showed a small chance of a break in the clouds, so also a small chance of a beautiful sunset. Indeed the sky was beautifully coloured when I arrived, with the sun peaking below some clouds, creating sun rays and reflections onto the wet beach. But unfortunately the actual moment of sunset was spoiled by low hanging clouds on the horizon. Nevertheless there were beautiful colours in the sky in different directions so I managed to get some nice shots after all.
As a nice bonus, two islanders approached me when I was taking my photo’s of the sunset and we had a nice chat about the weather conditions and life on the island outside tourist season. Although I personally enjoy that the island feels deserted, I can understand that for them this is a difficult period. It was therefore extra nice we could share our fondness for sunsets and coloured skies.
Enjoy!
