A sudden change
Today started of with a cloudy sky and as I admittedly was lazy I decided to stay inside. Later in the morning the clouds broke and we had a clear blue sky. Although not my most favourite conditions I gathered my gear and went out contemplating on how to create maybe an atypical sunset in these sunny, clear sky conditions. And I started daydreaming about some astrophotography later in the night. However, as soon as I entered the dunes thick banks of mist rolled in, and although the mist cleared somewhat as I continued to walk towards the beach, it stayed foggy and I could for sure forget a sunset this afternoon.
But this sudden change also brought with it a challenge: what to photograph when unprepared for mist, and how to show the mist in my abstract pattern photography? As I first hit on the lowest, youngest dunes with its typical dune grass I tried my luck there. I struggled to get my ideas across as illuminating the scene was difficult and I lost the foggy parts of the dunes rapidly in the highlights of the image. Here are my attempts.
After this I went onto the beach, searching for patterns once more, but now also including the mist creating a fading effect into nothingness. I think I succeeded better with this than with the dune grasses, especially in the first three images. Don’t forget to click on the previews to see the full image!
An advantage with this weather was that I had the entire beach to myself. Well, a disadvantage was that the beach felt so small as I was encapsulated in mist. Nonetheless I enjoyed todays exercise and I have the feeling I’m getting better at creating a reasonably good composition even when being totally unprepared.
Oh, and my daydreams about astrophotography? I just checked (20:15) the weather on my balcony and not a star in sight. So I guess I keep on dreaming and searching for other opportunities.
Enjoy!
