Coastal scenes
Today Hélène and I combined our passions for birdwatching and photography. We started our walk towards the Wadden Sea which we followed for a few kilometers eventually reaching the Western dunes and beach. It was great to be out together and although the weather didn't treat us to beautiful extremes as I’ve witnessed in the past two weeks, the fresh air did us good. Plus, the hard wind gave me a new haircut 😉, Hélène was smarter with her bonnet.
The coastline of the Wadden sea I haven’t photographed before, so I gave it a go. I like the wide vistas it presented and think that when I come back in different weather conditions like mist I can find some interesting compositions. But for now I’m happy with what I could do. The first photo actually shows lots of birds as little dots. I used to do a lot of bird photography but over the years switched to landscape photography; I currently don’t have a tele lens capable for bird photography. I leave that to Hélène, who has a great time with it.
Upon reaching the Western beach we walked onto the sand plate to a row of young dune grass that eventually can become a new row of dunes. It is really interesting to see the island develop. Although still very minute now, given time (multiple decades) the grasses will collect sand on which new grasses can grow, eventually creating new dunes. Of course, a very hard storm can still destroy the ‘baby’ dunes we see now, so only time will tell whether this is the start of a new row of dunes. In a way a good reason for coming back to this beautiful and friendly island.
While walking the beach I searched for more patters in the sand and new variations; I found a few compositions with different frequencies of motion: the slow one of the sand with a faster one of water ripples. Looking back to the many photos I made of these patterns I think I have a nice collection to make an interesting story. But that selection will have to wait for when I’m back home and can browse at ease through my photos.
Enjoy!
